The Flying Grif
By: Adam Sliger 9/21/1999

I, Billy-Bob Grif, age 36, awoke with difficulty to the loud ringing of my alarm clock on Monday morning. I slowly opened my eyes and looked around. Everything was fuzzy. I rubbed my eyes and sat up.

I reached over to the night stand on the left side of my bed. I picked up my glasses from the table, when I heard my dog bark. The noise startled me, and the glasses slipped out of my hand.

"Dag-Nabit!" I exclaimed as I swung my legs off the bed. I looked down at the floor, seeing nothing. "Aghh," I grunted as I dropped to the carpeted floor. I felt the ground around me with my hands, searching for my spectacles. I reached under my bed and felt the glasses. In an unsuccessful attempt at grabbing them, they were pushed further under the bed.

I lay down on the floor and extended my arm. Reaching, reaching. "Ow!" I yelled as I hit my head on the metal frame of the bed. I turned my neck and pushed my arm further.

My hand clasped around the glasses. I pulled my arm from beneath the bed, and took the glasses in both hands. I extended the arms, and placed the glasses on my nose.

"That's much better," I remarked as I looked around my bedroom. White sunlight was flowing into the room through the window. I glanced at the open door, and Fluffy, my dog, came trotting in. I reached over and pet the little terrier. I struggled to my feet. Once standing, I walked out of my bedroom, Fluffy following.

I made my way down the short hallway, stepped into the washroom, and shut the door behind me. I took care of my business, then washed my hands thoroughly. I then opened the door and proceeded to the kitchen.

I rounded the corner and dropped into a chair. I yawned as I grabbed a banana from the bowl in the middle of the small wooden table. I gripped the stem with two fingers and peeled my breakfast. I slowly ate my banana. Once I finished, I stood up, pushed in the chair and walked to the refrigerator. I opened it, and got out the orange juice. I pushed the carton open, and downed some fluid. I then closed the juice container, and crammed it back into the crowded little fridge.

I shut the refrigerator and grabbed the sack of dog food from the counter. I poured some into a bowl, and sat it on the floor for my dog. She came running happily, and began to chow down. I rolled up the dog food bag, and placed it on the counter.

I then walked quickly back to my room. As I entered the doorway, I reached to my left and flipped on the lights. I proceeded to the closet in the far corner of the room. I grabbed some clothes and shut my door. I changed hurriedly, and opened the door again.

I walked down the hallway, and stopped in the washroom again. I grabbed my toothbrush and squirted some toothpaste onto it. I wet the brush and stuck it into my mouth. I scrubbed my pearly whites, and removed the brush. I spit into the sink and formed a cup with my hands. I filled my hands with water, and poured some into my mouth. I rinsed, and spit once more. I then wiped my hands, and exited the room.

As I came to the kitchen, Fluffy jumped up on my legs. "Dang!" I exclaimed as the dog accidentally clawed my shins. I gently pushed the dog away, and examined my shins. I had two cuts, both of which were bleeding, but not much. "Oh well," I thought. "Fluffy, you need your claws clipped," I told the dog.

I walked past the kitchen and to the front door. I opened carefully, so the dog wouldn't get out. I stepped outside and took a deep breath. "Ahh," I sighed as I gazed upon the beautiful Rain Forest, not far from where I was standing. I shut the door, and stepped off the little wooden porch. I tromped across my front yard and eventually came to the edge of the forest.

I entered the Rain Forest. I loved the Rain Forest so much, and I was very familiar with it. I'd always wanted to discover a new species here, "That would be the greatest," I thought. I looked around and saw many pretty plants. I then proceeded deeper into the forest.

I heard the "Oooh Oooh Ahh Ahh!" of a monkey, and looked up. A monkey was in the tree in front of me. I saw a brown glob splat on the ground next to me, and realized that the primate was tossing feces at me. I ran past the tree and out of that darned monkey's throwing range.

"Phew," I said, "that was close." I kept walking and glancing around. I saw many animals, all of which I was familiar with. Such as; a sloth, a bore, several birds, a jaguar, and much more.

I then came upon a group of poison dart frogs. I walked past them, whistling to myself, and one jumped on my leg. I screamed when I realized what happened. The frog's poison had now started to seep into my bloodstream through the cut on my leg. I fell to the forest floor, immobile. The frogs had paralyzed my legs.

I watched as frogs leaped all over me. I knocked them away with my hands. "What a bad Monday morning," I thought. I was busy getting rid of the frogs, when I smelled smoke. "Oh No!" I yelled. The temperature was now rising rapidly. I realized what was going on. A fire!

"I'm going to die!" I yelled. Fire was surrounding me, and closing in. I was worried, of course. I couldn't move, I was sweating a river, and there was a forest fire. The flames were leaping closer as the fire grew. I closed my eyes and prepared my mind for death. I laid there for what seemed like hours, when I felt a breeze coming from above.

I opened my eyes, and saw flames all around me, anxious to consume my body. I looked up and saw a flying creature. It was covered in brown fur, and had wings, along with a long pointed tail. It was descending upon me. It grabbed a hold of me with it's long prehensile toes. It began to fly. Up I went, through the understory, then the canopy, and finally burst out into the emergent layer. The creature took me to the edge of the forest and set me down. I then flew quickly into the sky, and out of sight.

I was safe, And all thanks to a new species. "A new species?" I said to myself, "I found one!" I smiled as I lay on the grass outside the Rain Forest. I still couldn't move, so I got to thinking, "Maybe it wasn't such a bad day after all."
